A SoundFont is an instrument made of recordings: samples mapped across the keyboard and across how hard a key is struck. SF2 packs them into one file; SFZ is a text file that points at separate sample files.
In the Studio a SoundFont is an instrument like any other, with clips, effects and a whole song around it.
